Protesters against the IAA (International Automobil Austellung) are planning fresh demonstrations at Munich's City Hall
In the heart of Munich, a group of around 50 climate activists voiced their concerns against the IAA Mobility car show, calling for a stronger focus on climate protection. The activists, who were spotted throughout the town hall, hung up posters and chanted slogans like "Protecting the climate is not difficult, free public transportation."
The protest began on Tuesday evening, with approximately a dozen activists gathering at Munich Town Hall, expressing their opposition to the planned extension of the IAA Mobility car show until 2031. The activists, some wearing yellow vests to distinguish themselves, others blending in with town hall visitors, continued their protest on multiple floors of the building.
The following day, around 9 am, the climate activists left the town hall without any major incidents. However, over 40 police officers were gathered at the town hall to remove the protesters. The first activists were taken away around 6:30 pm.
The resistance is particularly against the use of public spaces in the city center, which are often closed for presentations and events during the show. The activists stood in front of the meeting rooms on the second floor, where the Climate Council was also meeting, holding banners.
On Wednesday, the continuation of IAA Mobility will be discussed in the city council. The police operation led to spectators being denied entry to public sessions.
In a related event, on Tuesday afternoon, the Munich Nature Conservation Association (BN) held a demonstration at Odeonsplatz against the IAA. The activists' goal is to prevent the IAA Mobility car show from taking place in Munich or on public places in the city center in the future.
As the city council deliberates on the future of the IAA Mobility car show, the climate activists' voices add to the growing call for sustainable solutions and the protection of public spaces in Munich. The identity of the activists who protested on Tuesday evening at the Munich City Hall remains undisclosed.
