Lars Klingbeil, the German Vice Chancellor and Federal Finance Minister, visited Kyiv, Ukraine, where he reiterated Germany's support for the country. During his visit, Klingbeil emphasised the importance of preventing Ukraine from being attacked again by Russia's President Putin.

In the initial stages of discussions on security guarantees, Klingbeil highlighted multiple options to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities. He stressed the need for a strong, defense-capable Ukrainian army and increased arms production to enhance self-defense and deterrence capabilities.

Klingbeil also stated that Germany has been standing by Ukrainian women and men for the past three and a half years. However, he did not provide any new details about Germany's readiness to participate in potential security guarantees for Ukraine.

Germany has been holding talks on possible forms of security guarantees for Ukraine with its European partners, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. These discussions are part of ongoing consultations within a "coalition of the willing" and the EU. Chancellor Merz is in continuous exchange with all relevant partners on this issue, and detailed plans, including possible German military contributions, are still being worked out in close coordination with the Americans and other allies.

However, Klingbeil did not specify any direct military contributions from Germany to secure a peace solution between Ukraine and Russia. The specifics of how Ukraine would be put in a position to defend itself and deter were not detailed in his statement.

Klingbeil's visit to Ukraine underscores Germany's commitment to supporting Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. As the leader of the SPD party, Klingbeil's stance reinforces Germany's stance against any further aggression from Russia towards Ukraine.
