In Grodno, Belarus, a 29-year-old pharmacy manager has been sentenced to 2 years in a general-regime colony for embezzling funds from the pharmacy he managed. The man, who was entrusted with managing the institution and given financial responsibility in May 2024, was found guilty under Part 3 of Article 211 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus for embezzlement or misappropriation of property. The embezzled funds were transferred to an online lottery system, a fact that came to light during an inventory at the pharmacy.
During the investigation into the incident, which was provided by the Grodno Regional Executive Committee's Internal Affairs Department, it was discovered that the man had a pre-existing pathological gambling addiction. His gambling activities were funded five times a day. The man fully confessed to his crimes during questioning.
The embezzled amount totaled more than Br38,000 over two months. In addition to the prison sentence, the man was also fined Br2,100. As a result of his crimes, the man has been banned from occupying positions related to cash management, storage, and disposal of material assets for 3 years.
The court also ordered a psychiatric examination for the man, which diagnosed him with a disorder of habits and inclinations, i.e., pathological gambling addiction.
